Parenting time is a concept related to but separate from custody. Parenting time is specifically related to which parent sees a child when, under what terms, and for how long.

Parenting time is determined by what is in the best interest of the child as defined by Indiana Law (I.C. 31-17-2-8). In addition to the statutory factors, there are guidelines that a court will consider when awarding parenting time to a parent. These guidelines are called the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines (IPTG).

In addition, in certain circumstances when there may be issues of mental illness, substance abuse, or a pattern of domestic violence, courts may order conditions on parenting time such as counseling, that parenting time be supervised, and/or that certain conditions are met for a party to have parenting time.
